We observed the transient SN2019gsc/ATLAS19mbg (Smartt et al. 2019; AstroNote 2019-23) using the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) equipped with the ALFOSC camera and spectrograph.
A 4x600 s spectrum was secured using grism 4 (covering the wavelength range 3600-9400 AA), starting on 2019 Jun 3.97 UT (MJD 58637.973). In addition, we obtained imaging in the griz filters. We measure r = 19.61 +/- 0.04 mag but we caution that this photometry is not image subtracted.
Our observations show SN 2019gsc to be a 2002cx-like (or Type Iax) SN. The spectrum is very similar to that of SN 2010ae (Stritzinger et al. 2014, A&A, 561, 146) around maximum light. It shows a large number of lines with velocities between 2000-3500 km/s and the expansion velocity of the Si II 6355 line is found to be approximately 3500 km/s. Together with its faint luminosity (M ~ -14 mag; see AstroNote 2019-23), this implies that SN 2019gsc is at the faint end of the SN Iax population (Foley et al. 2013, ApJ, 767, 57) and shares many similarities with SN 2010ae and SN 2008ha. Further observations of this rare object are encouraged.
