Spectroscopic classification of the bright NIR transient PGIR20eid/SN2020qmp as a young Type II supernova in UGC07125
Source Group: Gattini
Abstract:
We report spectroscopic classification of the bright NIR transient PGIR20eid/SN2020qmp as a young Type II supernova in UGC07125.
The bright NIR transient PGIR20eid/AT2020qmp was discovered by the Palomar Gattini-IR survey (De et al. 2020; Moore and Kasliwal 2019) on UT 2020-07-30 and reported as a young supernova candidate in UGC07125 (ATel #13909, Astronote 2020-147). On UT 2020-07-31, we obtained a low resolution optical spectrum of the source with the SED Machine spectrograph (Blagorodnova et al. 2018) on the Palomar 60-inch telescope.
The spectrum shows broad P-Cygni features of the Balmer series and He I. Using SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007) on the spectrum, we find a best match to the Type IIP SN 1999em at peak light, indicating a young Type II supernova. Further spectroscopic and photometric follow-up of this very nearby supernova is encouraged.
