Abstract:
We classify SN 2020udy in NGC 0812 (z=0.017222) as a young Type Iax supernova using spectra from the Palomar 60-inch and the Gemini North telescopes.

AT2020udy (ZTF20acdqjeq) was first discovered 2020-09-24 08:23:42.720 at r=19.63 in the vicinity of NGC 0812 (z=0.017222), and had ~1 day later brightened to g=18.67. Deep ZTF non-detections exist from 2020-09-23.

A spectrum taken with the 60-inch Telescope (SEDM) at Palomar Observatory shows a low velocity SNIa-spectrum similar to SN2002cx-like supernovae. These features were confirmed through Gemini North. The visual classification matches SNID (Blondin & Tonry 2007, 2007ApJ...666.1024B) template comparisons, which show good agreement with SN 2005hk at phase -8 (days).

Swift observations of SN 2020udy have been initiated. We encourage further follow-up.
