ATLAS24qlf (AT2024abup): discovery of a young candidate SN in NGC 0681 (approximately 20Mpc)

Abstract:
Here we report the ATLAS discovery of the transient ATLAS24qlf (AT2024abup) in galaxy NGC 0681 at magnitude m_c = 16.99 +/- 0.05. At a distance of approximately 20 Mpc, the transient was discovered on MJD = 60636.35 (2024-11-22.35) with an absolute magnitude of M = -14.6 +/- 0.2. The last non-detection through forced photometry was just 28hrs before on MJD = 60635.17. The source rose by more than 3 magnitudes in that 28hr period. Spectroscopic classification is encouraged.

ATLAS is a quadruple 0.5m telescope system with two units in Hawaii (Haleakala and Mauna Loa), and one each in Chile (El Sauce) and South Africa (Sutherland), see  Tonry et al. 2018, (PASP,130:064505). With the installation of the two southern units, we are robotically surveying the whole sky with a cadence of 1 day between -50 and +50 and 2 days in the polar regions, weather permitting. Two filters are used, cyan and orange (denoted c and o; all mags quoted are in the AB system). While carrying out the primary mission for Near-Earth Objects, we search for and publicly report stationary transients to the IAU Transient Name Server.  Data processing is carried out at Queen's University which combines automated source parameter filtering, machine learning image recognition, and spatial cross-matching with astronomical catalogues (Smith et al. 2020, PASP, 132:085002). We are submitting AstroNotes for transients that are either within 100 Mpc, or have some other interesting feature to bring to the community's attention, such as bright nuclear transients, slowly rising or rapidly fading objects.

We report a new transient source, most likely a supernova in the galaxy NGC 0681. We discovered ATLAS24qlf (AT2024abup) on MJD 60636.35 == 2024-11-22.35, at m_c = 16.99 +/- 0.05. There was no detection by ATLAS on MJD 60635.17 == 2024-11-21.17 (see attached forced photometry plot). The non-detection (c > 20 mag) 28hrs before the discovery indicates the source has risen by 3 magnitudes in that period 

ATLAS24qlf is offset by 7.7 arcsec north, 7.0 arcsec east from NGC 0681, which is at z = 0.005861, from NED. The Hubble flow distance is around 20 Mpc, but the Tully-Fisher distances summarised on NED have a large range between 16.7 and 49.7 Mpc. If we assume the Hubble flow distance is appropriate then the source has absolute magnitude of M = -14.6 (assuming m-M = 31.55 and A_g = 0.11 and A_r = 0.08). It could be 2 mags more luminous if the larger distance is appropriate. This is almost certianly a very young and neaby supernova and rapid followup observations are encouraged.
