Abstract:
We classify AT2025kzr as a young flash-ionised supernova.

AT2025kzr was recently discovered by ATLAS in a galaxy at 50 Mpc on 2025 May 22 at 01:05:22 UTC with a c-band magnitude of 17.00 (https://www.wis-tns.org/astronotes/astronote/2025-153). The Lesedi telescope at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in Sutherland, South Africa, responded automatically to the ATLAS discovery and obtained a 600s spectrum with the low-resolution (R~175) Mookodi spectrograph and imager beginning at 20:24:40 UTC on May 22, 19.3 hours after the ATLAS discovery.

The spectrum shows a blue continuum with strong flash-ionised features superimposed. Identified species include C III, He II and He I. The H-alpha line appears weak and H-beta is not present. The spectrum displays similarities to other flash-ionised supernovae, including SN 1998S and SN 2010al, but we have not found an exact match with the same lines and line ratios. Due to the early phase we refrain from assigning a definitive classification, as the event may evolve into a Type II, IIn or Ibn supernova.

We will obtain further imaging and spectroscopy with Mookodi and have requested Swift/UVOT follow-up. Further follow-up observations are encouraged.
