Abstract:
We report on the discovery of a possible SN in the nearby galaxy NGC 7331 at 13.6 ± 2.6 Mpc with GOTO L-band magnitude of 17.07 ± 0.03 AB mag at 14-07-2025 03:22:35 UTC. Assuming the host distance, this would imply a current absolute magnitude of M_L = -13.60 AB mag, suggesting the transient is a young SN on the rise.

We report the discovery of a new transient (GOTO25evh / AT 2025rbs) located in NGC 7331 at 13.6 ± 2.6 Mpc (Kourkchi et al. 2022). The transient was discovered by GOTO-North (Steeghs et al. 2022, Dyer et al. 2024) as part of our regular all-sky survey at 2025-07-14 03:22:35 UTC. Images were processed immediately after acquisition using the GOTO pipeline. Difference imaging was performed using deeper template observations of the same pointings. The transient was detected in GOTO L-band (g+r) in difference images with a forced photometry magnitude of L=17.07 ± 0.03 AB mag. The transient is 12.9” from the galactic centre, corresponding to an offset of 0.9 kpc. ZTF non-detections constrain the explosion epoch to after 2025-07-13 08:35:55 UTC, with a g-band limiting magnitude of 20.05 (AB). We strongly encourage follow-up observations.
