The BlackGEM consortium reports the discovery of a possibly young supernova in NGC 1398 at a distance of 24.8 Mpc, located at RA (ICRS) = 03:38:54.586 (54.727442), DEC (ICRS) = -26:22:14.65 (-26.370736). AT2025zi [BGEM J033854.58-262214.6] was first detected by BG3 at 2025-01-21 01:02:37 UT with a magnitude of q_AB = 20.07+/-0.12. The transient was again detected on the following night at 2025-01-22 01:57:37 UT with an increased brightness of q_AB = 19.65+/-0.08 magnitudes.
The most recent BlackGEM non-detection was at 2025-01-19 01:58:22 UT with q_AB > 21.2 (5-sigma) on BG2. This non-detection constrains the explosion time to a window of 1.96 days from the first detection.
Further constraints from other surveys and follow-up spectroscopy to identify the nature of AT2025zi are highly encouraged.
