Abstract:
We report the re-classification of SN 2026kie (ATLAS26epm/ZTF26aatzrft/GOTO26dqt) as Type Ic, based on a spectrum acquired with the 3.58m ESO New Technology Telescope. Our high S/N spectrum lacks any obvious contribution from He lines, and we therefore propose that the classification be changed from Type Ib to Type Ic.

SN 2026kie was discovered by ATLAS on 2026-04-22 16:06:45 in NGC 3437 (z = 0.0042). Using the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) on the 2.3m ANU telescope, the Supernova Alliance classified this object as SN Ib following a superfit match to SN 1987M (Schmidt et al.  2026, TNS Classification Report 2026-1791). We obtained a follow up spectrum on 2026-05-03 03:03:47 with ESO Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera version 2 (EFOSC2) on the 3.58m New Technology Telescope (NTT). Our spectrum shows that the object does not have any features that could be attributed to He lines. Using SNID-SAGE (Stoppa & Smartt, 2026), we find a good match to the Type Ic SN 2004aw for our NTT spectrum. See the attached spectrum for the SNID-SAGE fit. Our spectrum is consistent with those already available on TNS, however the classification was inaccurate as SN 1987M was mislabeled in superfit and is in fact Type Ic, not Type Ib.
