Date made public:
Sender: Melina Thévenot
Reporting Group: None Discovery Data Source: None
Melina Thévenot, Jörg Schümann report/s the discovery of a new astronomical transient.
IAU Designation: AT 2017kfx
Coordinates (J2000): RA = 17:28:21.437 (262.08932) DEC = -34:18:47.41 (-34.313169)
Discovery date: 2017-03-13 00:00:00.000 (JD=2457825.5)
Remarks: This object was found in the "Backyard Worlds: Planet 9" citizen science project. It is located in the galactic plane at the outskirts of the star-forming region NGC 6357 (aka the Lobster Nebula) and likely represents an outburst of a pre-main sequence star (PMS) that lasted for about a year.
