An amateur astronomer based in South Australia, I imaged M96 in various dates in March and April 2024. My stack of images for the luminance filter for the whole period includes frames (3 minute subs) taken on dates 240312 240314 240402 240404 240405 240406 240407 and shows this supernova present. Please see the attached file "M96 300x180 lum 240312 240314 240402 240404 240405 240406 240407.jpg". [I have stacked without pixel rejection to try to give as "pure" data as possible, though note that the files have been calibrated with darks and flats.] I have tried to pin down when it appeared more precisely. It is not visible in 3 minute exposures, and so I have compared stacks of 19 of them to make it visible. The file "240402 1224-1326UTC stack cal align norejection 19x180 luminance.jpg" shows the stack for the indicated UTC range on April 2. It is not visible in that. Hence it is certainly not there at 1224 UTC on April 2. It is visible (just) in the file "240404 0951-1050UTC stack cal align norejection 19x180 luminance.jpg". Hence it is there by 1050 UTC on April 4. There was no more luminance data available on April 4. But 76 frames on April 5 confirm it was definitely there then (just in case there is doubt with the April 4 observation). Both 76 and 19 frame stacks are in the corresponding files. I have 24 300 second green filter shots from April 3 at a similar time of day but a stack of those is inconclusive. The original data files are available on request.

Amateur observation 2024-04-04 (6)

I realise my claimed observation on April 4 (and second observation on April 5) is in contradiction to the initial report's stated last non-detection of April 6. I do not understand this discrepancy.

Amateur observation 2024-04-04 (1)

An amateur astronomer based in South Australia, I imaged M96 in various dates in March and April 2024.

My stack of images for the luminance filter for the whole period includes frames (3 minute subs) taken on dates 240312 240314 240402 240404 240405 240406 240407 and shows this supernova present. Please see the attached file "M96 300x180 lum 240312 240314 240402 240404 240405 240406 240407.jpg". [I have stacked without pixel rejection to try to give as "pure" data as possible, though note that the files have been calibrated with darks and flats.]

I have tried to pin down when it appeared more precisely.

The original data files are available to anyone interested. Also, details of equipment and exposures (and the processed picture!) are on Astrobin here:
