Grace Katusiime, Marco A. Gómez-Muñoz, Nadejda Blagorodnova, Hugo Tranin, Maxime Wavasseur, Gerard Garcia (ICCUB), David Jones (IAC), Viraj Karambelkar (Caltech) report/s a classification of object: AT 2024mxe

Type: Gap

Remarks: Despite having a poor signal-to-noise ratio, the spectrum shows a narrow H-alpha line but lacks broad supernova features. Given its estimated absolute magnitude of -14.6, we conclude that AT 2024mxe is not a supernova but rather a transient in the luminosity gap between novae and supernovae.

The following Classification spectrum was provided:

Obsdate: 2024-07-12 03:21:36
Instrument: CAFOS
Telescope: Calar Alto 2.2m Telescope

Remarks: 15 UT was obtained with the low-resolution CAFOS instrument mounted on the 2.2 m telescope at Calar Alto Observatory. The observations were made with the G-200 grism and a 2 arcsec slit, with a total exposure time of 2700s. The data reduction was done using IRAF. Given the location of the transient on top of a bright host, the background was carefully adjusted to minimize host contamination. We performed flux calibration using the standard star HD 93521.
